Australian Cricket Team Not Kneading the Dough – LCHF

Australia wins the 2 Ashes Tests in a row after no Test wins since January 6

Hear Dr Peter Brukner, Australian Cricket Team Doctor explain how the changed diet of the Aussie cricketers may very well be contributing to the turnaround in form. Several of the players have adopted the NoFructose concept of Low Carbs and High Fat and are seeing remarkable transformations within a few months.

It has helped their fitness and weight and has created a feel good attitude which is a major asset for professional sportspeople. Continue reading

Inroads in the ‘Junk Food’ Hospital Debacle

Photo: Inroads in the 'Junk Food' Hospital DebacleLast week saw the introduction of some changes at the Launceston General Hospital. A start! There has been a relabelling of the drink fridges in the hospital cafeteria. The Coca Cola signage is down and replaced with Mt Franklin Water. Same company but a different message. After existing stocks are depleted they will no longer stock Red Bull or Mother. Some of the vending machines now have healthier options. Cheese and biscuits and a nut mix in the first one I came across. It’s not up to the 80% healthy options but it is a step by the Food Services department to change. They are also in negotiation with the ‘Pink Ladies’ to see what can change at the kiosk level.Great to see that one of the head cooks and I believe 2 of the dieticians came along to my presentation on Friday night. Let's see if anything comes of that.Alas NO inroads with withdrawing chocolates off the desks in the ward situation. The Minister of Health, Michelle O’Byrne is not willing to do anything confrontational coming into an election early next year. Hopefully the nursing staff will develop a conscience when it comes to advertising poor food choices directly in the face of patients suffering from the build-up effects of those poor choices. I wonder if the ongoing decision to keep selling them is based on their stubbornness and pride though! No one likes admitting they are wrong but this one remains a no brainer.

‘Carbohydrate’ Diabetes

shutterstock_135460946Diabetes is generally known as ‘Sugar’ Diabetes when it really is a problem of handling Glucose.

Glucose is half of sugar but most people forget that the carbs in our diet are starches which effectively break down to glucose immediately. That slice of bread will affect the blood glucose levels as much as ice cream!

I would like to start to see the term ‘Carbohydrate’ Diabetes be adopted and accept that sugar is just a simple carbohydrate.

So for all the same reasons that Diabetics are told to be careful with sugar then the same should apply to carbohydrates such as bread, rice, pasta and potato. Continue reading

Sugar on the ‘Table’ in Launceston

Tailrace 6 12 13

Over 300 interested people came along last night to the Tailrace Centre to hear the ‘Fructose and Fat – Fact or Fashion’ talk.

That is a huge response in our local Tasmanian community and shows that there is a growing interest in this topic.

I heard some great moving stories in the Q & A session and if anyone wonders why I continue on this pathway, then it is those stories that continue to propel me. Continue reading

Committed Sardines and Fructose and Blue Whales

shutterstock_141403069

A school of Sardines can reach enormous sizes as big as a Blue Whale, the largest mammal on earth. That school of fish can change direction in a ‘blink of an eyelid’ whereas a Blue Whale can take up to 3 minutes to turn 180 degrees.

Have you considered how a school of fish can do that?

At any point of time in that mass of fish there will be fish swimming in the opposite direction. If enough fish START A CHANGE then there will be a tipping point and the entire school will change immediately. That percentage is often only a small number. Continue reading

Low Carb Down Under – Melbourne 2013

Photo: Low Carb Down Under Melbourne Meeting I had a great weekend in Melbourne at the Low Carb Down Under meeting. We had nearly 400 people at the St Kilda Town Hall listening to a series of lectures related to the concept of better eating for better health.“The Flawed Science of Nutrition—Convenience, Politics and Dollars” seemed to be well received. It was great to meet, chat and share the stage with the speakers including David Gillespie, Professor Grant Schofield from New Zealand, Dr Peter Brukner who is the doctor for the Australian Cricket team and Dr Troy Schofield who spoke on Type 1 Diabetes management. Christine Cronau was great but we got caught at different ends of the hall to chat directly. Damon Gameau gave a humorous taster leading up to his upcoming film related to him eating a 'healthy' recommended diet and the health effects on him. Some of the talks will be available on You Tube very soon. I shall keep you informed. We were all busy catching up with the audience and did not manage to get those glory shots with each other. I did get this one of my Melbourne family support crew. The 'kids' rolled up and I don't think Dad embarrassed them too much. Looking forward to this Friday and doing the Launceston talk. If the Melbourne session was anything to go by then there is genuine interest growing on this topic. It has to be good for us.Listen to Fairsy and Jules on 7LA tomorrow in the morning for 2 more tickets up for grabs.Tickets still for sale via Theatre North and we will have some available on the night.http://theatrenorth.com.au/fructose-and-fat-fact-or-fiction/

Great to catch up with the Melbourne community and speak at the same forum as Grant Schofield, David Gillespie, Peter Brukner, Troy Stapleton, Zee Arain, Christine Cronau and Damon Gameau.

I am not alone. 🙂

Take the link to Professor Grant Schofield’s summary of last weekends talks in Melbourne as well as the first video from that Low Carb Down Under meeting.

He described my talk as:

“The Flawed Science of Nutrition—Convenience, Politics and Dollars” – Dr Gary Fettke. Gary is a Launceston Orthopaedic Surgeon (nofructose.com). He is the medical expert for Sarah Wilson’s ‘I Quit Sugar’ program. This guy is really cool and a very articulate presenter. He just spun a nice story about his life and times, and the life and times of the refined dietary carbohydrate. Take home message – if you eat crappy carbs then all bets are off for good health outcomes. Get rid of them!

‘Greed’on for Freedom Foods 3 Ancient Grains Muesli

Photo: ‘Greed’on for Freedom Foods 3 Ancient Grains MuesliBlatant ‘Fructose Free’ mislabelling from a company that labels their food as ‘Honest’. This is straight out deception trying to market a product.‘Fructose Free’ and ‘No Fructose Detected’ yet the muesli bar has Sucrose in it which is 50% Fructose. It gets worse. It states on the label:‘Peanuts Not Detected, Hazelnuts Not Detected and Almonds Not Detected’I would expect that as they are not in the ingredients. It’s a bit like advertising there is no alcohol in a glass of milk. Why put it on the label unless you are trying to market something. All this does is confusing the buyer who reads the front packaging and sees the advertising.PS. This ‘Honest and Nutritious‘ food also contains Seed oil.Freedom Foods destined to the sin bin on this one. Shame to criticize an Australian product but there is too much deception out there already.More on reading food labels at:http://www.nofructose.com/food-ideas/looking-at-labels/
