“The Answer is in the Pyramid”

“The Pyramid is upside down”

A recent South Park episode looking at gluten free diets nails the topic of our modern diet on the head.

The ‘bureaucracy’ recognise that health is related to nutrition. Wow – first step.

The USDA try “all combinations of the 5 food groups but none are working” until they put “butter and fat at the top”.

When they recognise that the long time promoted food pyramid has been upside down, they send out the NEW food pyramid and immediately “Nutrition is stabilising!”

The link between Cancer, Obesity and Diet

cancer

The more I read the more I am convinced of the link between diet and cancer. A lot hinges around the role of insulin on stimulating factors involved in cellular division and metabolism.

A diet high in fructose and refined fibreless carbohydrate just keeps hammering away at the pancreas, giving us insulin spikes and a chronic stimulation of the system, ultimately responding in an insulin resistance.

This review article by Dr Elio Riboli notes the increased risk of late onset breast cancer, colon, rectum, endometrial, oesophageal and kidney cancers with obesity. He touches on the association between high sugar and carbohydrate load in the article.

I agree with him on the concept of where we were with the links of tobacco and disease were known for a long time but action took longer.

What is LCHF?

Photo
LCHF is eating by the concept of a diet of Low Carbohydrate and High (Saturated) Fat intake. It is sort of two thirds of the No Fructose concept.

Fructose is half of sugar. Sugar is a carbohydrate and the fructose portion ‘makes you’ hungry and gets turned into the ‘bad cholesterol’ – the small dense LDL’s (low density lipoproteins).

Glucose is another carbohydrate and it makes up half of sugar and is the basic carbohydrate in starch, bread, pasta and rice.

Glucose that is not used up immediately by the brain and muscle in particular goes to fat production. Continue reading

Are ‘Carbs’ the Problem?

Carbs

There is a surprising amount of ‘energy’ in carbohydrate and if you are struggling with the weight control then look at the ‘carb’ intake.

Carbohydrate commonly comes in the form of bread, rice and pasta. These have a lot of glucose in them.

Carbohydrate is essentially glucose and glucose is fuel. If you take in more than you require immediately then the excess is stored. The glycogen stores are replenished in the liver and the rest goes to fat storage.

One slice of bread, white or grain has about 5 teaspoons of glucose in it which is the same energy load as 5 teaspoons of sugar. That will have approximately the same effect on blood glucose as having a large scoop of ice cream.

100 grams of dry weight pasta or rice when cooked is about a bowl full. It has the equivalent of 16 teaspoons of glucose which is the same energy load as 16 teaspoons of sugar.

The digestion of carbohydrate starts with saliva in the mouth and continues through the intestine. It is rapidly broken down into glucose which is transported into the blood and then either metabolised or stored. High glucose levels provoke an insulin response which stimulates a fat storage response along with other effects.

Vegetables have varying amounts of carbohydrate in them and potato has a significant amount. The more colour to the vegetable, generally the less carb and the more fibre. Fibre is good as it slows up the absorption of the carbohydrate and results in less of a glucose spike in the blood stream.

Is it no wonder that farmers fatten up their stock by grain feeding them. We are fattening up society by grain feeding – a massive energy load in the form of carbohydrate which is just glucose.

Pudding for the Poms Prompts Poor Performance?

Christmas puddingThat Christmas pudding laden with sugar and carbs may not have helped the English cricket team in the Boxing Day Ashes test match. Or was it the lack of a sugar binge on Christmas day that helped the Australian team to go 4 nil up?

Clearly the change in diet for most of the Australian cricket team this year to Low Carb (low fructose) and high fat is not ‘proof’ that diet alone will turn a team performance around. Nor is that Christmas pudding enough to cause the demise of the English cricketers.

None of this is ‘Proof of the Pudding’ that diet is the answer but the Australian cricketers who have adopted this eating strategy have all improved their weights, lean body mass and skin folds – with a better mental attitude and now performance results.

The USA LA Lakers basketball team have switched over to this change in eating in the last few months.  Norwegian football club Strømsgodset (champions in 2013) have flipped over too into this more efficient ‘fuel’ for the system.

The ‘Proof of the Pudding’ is there for you to experience yourself. May 2014 bring in a real change in health and well being for more of us.

Australian Cricket Team Not Kneading the Dough – LCHF

Australia wins the 2 Ashes Tests in a row after no Test wins since January 6

Hear Dr Peter Brukner, Australian Cricket Team Doctor explain how the changed diet of the Aussie cricketers may very well be contributing to the turnaround in form. Several of the players have adopted the NoFructose concept of Low Carbs and High Fat and are seeing remarkable transformations within a few months.

It has helped their fitness and weight and has created a feel good attitude which is a major asset for professional sportspeople. Continue reading

‘Greed’on for Freedom Foods 3 Ancient Grains Muesli

Photo: ‘Greed’on for Freedom Foods 3 Ancient Grains MuesliBlatant ‘Fructose Free’ mislabelling from a company that labels their food as ‘Honest’. This is straight out deception trying to market a product.‘Fructose Free’ and ‘No Fructose Detected’ yet the muesli bar has Sucrose in it which is 50% Fructose. It gets worse. It states on the label:‘Peanuts Not Detected, Hazelnuts Not Detected and Almonds Not Detected’I would expect that as they are not in the ingredients. It’s a bit like advertising there is no alcohol in a glass of milk. Why put it on the label unless you are trying to market something. All this does is confusing the buyer who reads the front packaging and sees the advertising.PS. This ‘Honest and Nutritious‘ food also contains Seed oil.Freedom Foods destined to the sin bin on this one. Shame to criticize an Australian product but there is too much deception out there already.More on reading food labels at:http://www.nofructose.com/food-ideas/looking-at-labels/

Dining with the Devil

The CEO, John Kirwan has told me that the funds from the sale of Junk Food via the hospital auxiliary buys much needed equipment for the hospital. In particular the funds often go to bed purchases and the latest ‘big’ expense is now the purchase of ‘Bariatric’ beds. These are for those super obese patients. We know that poor food choices account for the majority of obesity related conditions including Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases, Dementia and all the rest.Am I the only one that sees the irony of all of this?Does the end truly justify the means? The trouble with hospitals selling and promoting Junk Food is that somewhere along the line they are ‘profiting’ at the expense of the well-being of the community. I do not for one minute believe this is just a Launceston issue. All I hear is the same all around Australia.I suspect the Devil is enjoying his dining partners.Time to break up the party.http://www.independent.ie/opinion/columnists/david-mcwilliams/david-mcwilliams-linking-hospital-boss-benefits-to-sale-of-mars-bars-makes-me-sick-29768858.html

Feedback from the Heart Foundation or lack thereof. Out of date once again!

deathtick1

Many of you will have signed the online petition calling for the Heart Foundation to stop giving out of date advice regarding diet in the management of cardiovascular health. Nearly 20000 signatories now on board.

Jessie Reimers from Brisbane has put her efforts behind this and the cause was put up on A Current Affair last week.

The Heart Foundation (HF) responded that very evening and once again tried to dismiss it as sensationalist and misinformed. They have described Jessie as ‘the petition author is not qualified to give health or dietary advice and we would encourage people to seek such advice from qualified professionals.’

By definition that makes me as unqualified as much as the next person. All that I have done is look at the information that is now so readily available and come to my own conclusions. I then have put ‘on the line’ my own qualifications and am very happy to take this stand and go against the Heart Foundation. Continue reading

‘Creation’ Explained from the Food Aspect

Photo: ‘Creation’ Explained from the Food Aspect – a light hearted opinionIn the beginning, God created the Heavens and the Earth and populated the Earth with broccoli, cauliflower and spinach, green and yellow and red vegetables of all kinds, so Man and Woman would live long and healthy lives. Then using God's great gifts, Satan created Ice Cream and Krispy Creme Donuts. And Satan said, "You want chocolate with that?" And Man said, "Yes!" and Woman said, "and as long as you're at it, add some sprinkles." And they gained 10 pounds. And Satan smiled. And God created the healthy yoghurt that Woman might keep the figure that Man found so fair. And Satan brought forth white flour from the wheat and sugar from the cane and combined them. And Woman went from size 6 to size 14.So God said, "Try my fresh green salad." And Satan presented Thousand-Island Dressing, croutons and garlic toast on the side. And Man and Woman unfastened their belts following the repast.God then said, "I have sent you heart healthy vegetables and olive oil in which to cook them." And Satan brought forth deep fried fish and chicken-fried steak so big it needed its own platter. And Man gained more weight and his cholesterol went through the roof. God then created a light, fluffy white cake, named it "Angel Food Cake," and said, "It is good." Satan then created chocolate cake and named it "Devil's Food."God then brought forth running shoes so that His children might lose those extra pounds. And Satan gave cable TV with a remote control so Man would not have to toil changing the channels. And Man and Woman laughed and cried before the flickering blue light and gained pounds. Then God brought forth the potato, naturally low in fat and brimming with nutrition. And Satan peeled off the healthful skin and sliced the starchy centre into chips and deep-fried them in Polyunsaturated Oils. And Man gained pounds.God sighed and created quadruple bypass surgery. Then Satan created Cuts to the Health Care System.Amen#GaryFettkeNoFructose #lchf #diet #WeightLoss #fat #sugarfree #sugar #SweetPoison #Fructose #NoFructose #IQS #carbs
